Description of the experiment:

Day 1 – Nouméa → La Foa → Bourail (200 km) – Immersion in a tribal community

Departure at 8 a.m. from Nouméa heading north, along the west coast of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, between turquoise lagoons and Caledonian bush landscapes.

After about a 2-hour drive, immerse yourself in the heart of the La Foa Valley as you discover the Koindé tribe, nestled in the central mountain range. You’ll be welcomed according to Kanak custom, followed by a guided tour of the tribe. Marie-Claude will introduce you to the customs and traditions of Kanak culture, which is deeply connected to nature and ancestral traditions.

A traditional lunch, prepared with fresh, organic, locally sourced ingredients from the tribe, will be served to you for an authentic shared experience.

In the afternoon, visit Fort Teremba, a major historic site located between Moindou and La Foa. Built in 1871, this fort bears witness to the penal and administrative history of the Uaraï region (La Foa–Farino–Moindou).

Before arriving in Bourail, stop at Néra Beach, facing the famous “Bonhomme”a sedimentary rock formation sculpted by the ocean—and then at Turtle Bay, a protected natural site. These beaches are nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles, which are protected from November through February, in the heart of a UNESCO-designated site.

We arrived at the hotel in Bourail around 5 p.m., after a day full of cultural, natural, and historical discoveries

Day 2 – Bourail → Voh → Poum (265 km) – A Deep Dive into the Bush

7:30 a.m. – Departure from Bourail toward Voh (about a 2½-hour drive). All along the west coast of New Caledonia, you’ll pass through a series of small villages with scattered homes. This landscape, typical of the “New Caledonian Far West,” is characterized by its vast, fertile plains, shaped by livestock farming and agriculture, offering another authentic facet of the region.

Upon your arrival in Voh, meet your guide for a 4×4 excursion up Mount Katépaïck. From the summit, enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the lagoon, the coral reef, and the mountain range. It is here that you’ll see the famous Heart of Voh, a natural mangrove formation made world-famous by Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s aerial photographs. This unique landscape perfectly illustrates how mangrove ecosystems function, shaped by the muddy soils and the tides.

Lunch in Voh, then on to the far north of New Caledonia to visit the former chrome mining village of Thiébaghi. Discovered as early as 1875, chrome ore was not mined until the 1910s, particularly with the rise of the steel industry. The mine reached its peak between 1915 and 1929, during which time nearly 40,000 metric tons of ore were extracted. This tour will give you insight into the territory’s mining and industrial history. Arrival at the hotel around 5:00 p.m.

Day 3 – Poum and Poingam (50 km), on the edge of New Caledonia’s Far North

8:30 a.m. – Departure from the hotel toward Poingam, via one of the most spectacular roads in northern New Caledonia. The landscape gradually transforms into an arid, almost lunar setting, with shades of orange, ochre, and pristine white. Along the way, it’s not uncommon to spot wild horses roaming freely, before reaching a place where absolute silence and serenity reign.

The morning continues on to Boat Pass, the northern tip of Grande Terre, and then to Mr . Broudissou’s property. You’ll discover “La Case à Sel,” a charming shop showcasing high-quality local products: essential oils, handmade soaps, and jewelry.

From this spot, an easy hike of about 1 hour round-trip begins, taking you through wild beaches and salt marshes to the Kô clay baths—a natural, peaceful setting perfect for relaxation and reconnecting with nature.

A table d’hôtes lunch on a paradise-like beach, followed by free time for swimming in an idyllic setting.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped at the Col d’Arama lookout point, which offers an exceptional panoramic view of both coasts of Grande Terre and a first glimpse of the next stop on our trip: Ouégoa.

Arrival at the hotel in the afternoon, followed by free time and relaxation.

Day 4 – Poum → Ouegoa → Hienghène (185 km) – From the West Coast to the East Coast

7:45 a.m. – Departure for Ouégoa for a boat tour lasting about 2 hours to explore the mouth of the Diahot River, the longest river in New Caledonia. The boat winds its way through giant mangroves, natural meanders, and remnants of mining activity, evoking the history of Ouégoa, which was once the territory’s main mining town in the early 20th century.

At the end of this river trip, enjoy a traditional bush lunch at your guide’s home—a warm and authentic experience that lets you discover the local culture and flavors.

In the afternoon, we’ll set off for the east coast of New Caledonia, crossing the Amos Pass, which offers stunning panoramic views of the lagoon. The route continues along the coast, passing through Balade, a place steeped in history where James Cook landed in 1774 and where France’s claim to New Caledonia was proclaimed in 1853.

The contrast in the landscapes is striking: here, the narrow coastal strip quickly gives way to a mountain range that plunges almost directly into the ocean. This proximity to the mountains fosters dense, lush vegetation, punctuated by spectacular waterfalls visible along the entire route. You’ll also pass through numerous tribal communities, a testament to the cultural richness of the East Coast.

The region is also known for its soapstone crafts, a local specialty. Small roadside stalls offer visitors the chance to discover these surprisingly lightweight sculptures.

The journey continues with a crossing of the Ouaième River aboard the last ferry still in service in New Caledonia—an experience in its own right.

Arrival in the village of Hienghène from the north, with several stops at scenic overlooks of Hienghène Bay, famous for its black limestone rock formations, including the legendary “Poule Couveuse.”

We arrived at the hotel around 5 p.m.

Day 5 – Hienghène → Poindimié (100 km) – The Stunning East Coast

9:00 a.m. – Departure from the hotel for a morning spent exploring the Hienghène region, considered one of New Caledonia’s most beautiful natural sites.

Founded in 1887, the village of Hienghène has a population of about 2,500 today. It is also known as the birthplace of Jean-Marie Tjibaou, a leading figure in the Kanak independence movement and a key player in the Matignon Accords signed in June 1988. This stop offers a better understanding of the territory’s political and cultural history.

Stop at the famous “Billet de 500” beach, which offers a spectacular view of the impressive black limestone cliffs, reaching heights of up to 60 meters.

Visit to the Hienghène Cultural Center, where magnificent sculptures representing the region’s 21 tribes are on display, along with two traditional huts symbolizing the local customary districts.

We continue on to the Hienghène Valley, home to some of the most isolated tribes on Grande Terre. We’ll stop at the Wan Yaat Ambush Memorial, followed by a tribal luncha special opportunity to interact and share experiences with the local people.

After lunch, we’ll head to Poindimié, traveling along the east coast of New Caledonia, renowned for its lush landscapes. The road winds through green valleys, past waterfalls, turquoise lagoons, and rugged hills, offering numerous breathtaking views and several photo stops.

We arrived at the hotel in Poindimié around 5 p.m.

Day 6 – Poindimié → Bourail → Farino → Nouméa (320 km)

8:00 a.m. – Departure from Hienghène toward Bourail, traveling through an iconic stretch of New Caledonia’s east coast. The route is dotted with remarkable sites: the Tchamba Bridge, the cross-shaped bridge at Ponérihouen, and the Bâ Waterfall, just before Houaïlou. Photo stops are available along the way to admire these varied landscapes.

In the morning, you’ll arrive at the property of Cindy Barronnet, owner of a 140-hectare ranch. You’ll be welcomed with warmth, simplicity, and authenticity, in the spirit of the New Caledonian bush, where every visitor is treated like a friend.

You’ll then set off in a 4×4 to explore the higher elevations of the property, which offer beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This immersive experience is followed by a bush lunch, featuring an assortment of traditional New Caledonian dishes, carefully prepared by Cindy and her family.

After lunch, head to Farino, New Caledonia’s smallest town, nestled in the heart of the mountains. You’ll visit the Parc des Grandes Fougères for a guided walk of about 1 hour through the rainforest, where you’ll discover giant ferns, lush vegetation, and numerous endemic bird species.

At the end of the day, we continued on our way to Nouméa.
We arrived around 5 p.m., marking the end of our shift.
